What is rate limiting?

When using an Optify feature related to Twitter or LinkedIn, you may see mesages mentioning rate limits. What are rate limits?

When accessing social media accounts, Optify connects to those applications through an API, or application programming interface.  For example, when you use the Twitter for Business application, you are connected to your Twitter account via their API. Similarly, when you use the Lead Detail application, you are connected to your LinkedIn account via the LinkedIn API.

To control the use of their data, these APIs limit how many times a user can access or "call" it.  The actual limit varies, but Twitter tends to limit at 100 calls an hour and LinkedIn at 100 calls per calendar day. When you exceed these limits in Optify, a message tells you you have reached your API limit.

So what counts as an API call? Again, it depends on the application and the account type. The Twitter API is called for events such as posting a tweet or a direct message, favoriting a tweet, unfollowing or following a user. The LinkedIn API is called every time Optify matches a lead to your LinkedIn network or when you request an introduction.
